Chowgule Shipyard signs deal for hydrogen cargo vessels

Chowgule Shipyard in Goa has signed a contract with Green Maritime Infrastructure (GMI) to construct two hydrogen-powered cargo vessels, supporting the development of GMI’s zero-emission fleet and advancing sustainable coastal shipping.

The two vessels will each have a capacity of 3,000 deadweight tonnes (dwt) and will be powered by hydrogen fuel-cell technology, enabling emissions-free operations.

The contract was signed during SMM Hamburg 2026, bringing together industry partners focused on developing cleaner maritime transport solutions.

The vessels will be constructed at Chowgule Shipyard’s facility in Goa and are expected to contribute to the adoption of hydrogen-powered shipping in the coastal cargo sector.

The agreement marks another step in GMI’s efforts to expand its zero-emission fleet and highlights India’s growing role in the development and construction of alternative-fuel vessels.
