Port of Montreal and Adani Group renew trade agreement
Port of Montreal and Adani Group renew their partnership to strengthen the Mundra–Montreal trade corridor, improve cargo connectivity and expand India–Canada trade.
The Montreal Port Authority (MPA) and Adani Group have renewed their collaboration agreement to strengthen maritime trade between India and Canada, improve cargo movement and create new business opportunities for companies in both countries.
The agreement was announced during Team Canada's trade mission to India, taking place from 12 to 17 October. It was signed in Mumbai by Captain Sandeep Mehta, representing Adani Group, and Marie-Claude Galarneau, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating and Transformation Officer of MPA, in the presence of Canada's Minister of International Trade, Maninder Sidhu.
The renewed agreement builds on cooperation established in 2018 and focuses on developing trade through the Mundra–Montreal maritime corridor, sharing information to identify business opportunities and exchanging port and technological expertise.
The two organisations will also explore ways to improve road and rail connectivity, facilitate vehicle transportation and encourage exchanges between their teams.
India becomes Montreal Port's second-largest trading partner
India ranked as the Port of Montreal's second-largest trading partner in 2025, with approximately 1 million tonnes of goods exchanged between the two countries through the port. Exports accounted for 60% of the trade volume, while imports represented 40%.
Major commodities imported from India include food products, ceramics and plastics, while exports to India include forestry and metal products.
The MPA said the renewed agreement and its appointment of Prakash Tulsiani as its new agent in India would strengthen its presence in the market. The local representative will engage with shipping lines, freight forwarders, importers and exporters to promote trade and identify business opportunities.
Focus on port efficiency and supply chain resilience
The partnership aims to improve the movement of goods and enhance port infrastructure by sharing operational and technological expertise. It also seeks to strengthen supply-chain resilience as both countries pursue trade diversification amid changing global trade conditions.
MPA President and Chief Executive Officer Paul Bird said the agreement and the appointment of a local representative would help the port deepen its relationship with India and support businesses seeking new markets.
Adani Group's Captain Sandeep Mehta said the renewed memorandum of understanding reaffirmed both organisations' commitment to strengthening maritime and commercial ties. He also highlighted their shared membership in the International Association of Ports and Harbors as an opportunity to expand cooperation.
Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu said the partnership could help Canadian exporters access the Indian market and build more resilient supply chains. He also pointed to ongoing efforts to conclude a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement between Canada and India.
The renewed collaboration is expected to support trade development along the Mundra–Montreal corridor and strengthen commercial links between India and Canada's economic markets.
