JSW Infra wins Kolkata port terminal project with 0.93m TEU capacity
The 30-year PPP concession adds to JSW Infra’s existing NSD projects and is expected to raise its Kolkata Dock System capacity to 1.4m TEUs.
JSW Infrastructure has received a Letter of Award (LOA) from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) for the integrated development of the Outer Container Terminal and Berths 1 to 5 at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) in the Kolkata Dock System.
The project will be developed on a Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) basis under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. It includes the construction of two outer container berths and the takeover of five existing berths at NSD.
The project is expected to create a combined handling capacity of around 0.93 million TEUs, equivalent to 13 million tonnes per annum of containers and multipurpose cargo. The concession period will be 30 years from the date of award and the project will be executed in two phases.
JSW Infrastructure said the project is aimed at increasing container handling capacity, improving operational efficiency and supporting growing trade volumes in the region.
The award follows the company’s earlier LOA for the reconstruction of Berth 8 and the mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8 at NSD, which will add capacity of 0.45 million TEUs. Interim operations for that project are expected to begin shortly.
With the addition of the new project, JSW Infrastructure’s total container handling capacity at the Kolkata Dock System is expected to reach around 1.4 million TEUs upon completion, including the capacity from the ongoing Berth 7 and 8 project.
The company said the projects are supported by demand from the Kolkata metropolitan region and its surrounding hinterland. They are expected to help address capacity constraints at NSD, improve berth productivity through mechanisation and reduce vessel turnaround times.
JSW Infrastructure said this is its second project win from SMPA within a year. Once its identified container growth projects are completed, the company’s overall container handling capacity is expected to increase to around 1.8 million TEUs.
The company was informed about the award through an email received on June 8, 2026.
