ITOCHU Corporation has acquired a portion of the equity securities of Aegis Terminal (Pipavav) (ATPL) from Aegis Vopak Terminals(AVTL), investing in the ammonia storage terminal business at Port Pipavav in Gujarat.

The investment comes shortly after the terminal was transferred to ATPL by Aegis Logistics for ₹5.25 billion on August 24, 2026. The newly built terminal, with an ammonia storage capacity of approximately 36,000 metric tonnes (MT), or 52,000 cubic metres, was completed and became operationally ready on August 10.

The terminal is described as India’s first independent ammonia storage terminal. It includes integrated logistics infrastructure such as cargo handling facilities, pipelines, and truck loading and unloading facilities at Port Pipavav.

ITOCHU said the investment will strengthen ammonia logistics infrastructure and support the development of green energy applications in India.

Ammonia demand is expanding amid global population growth, rising food and energy demand, and the transition towards green energy, according to ITOCHU. Besides its traditional applications in fertilisers and industry, ammonia is expected to see growing demand in clean energy applications, including as a fuel and hydrogen carrier.

With medium- to long-term demand growth expected in the Indian market, ITOCHU aims to build on its long-term relationships with core customers, including fertiliser and chemical manufacturers. It also plans to position the business for expansion into fuel and clean energy applications.

ITOCHU has previously developed storage terminal businesses with Aegis Group companies in India, primarily in the LPG sector. The company said it will build on this foundation to strengthen its presence in the ammonia sector, reinforce logistics infrastructure and establish a stable supply chain in the Indian market.

The business will be promoted through a joint model that combines ITOCHU’s global ammonia trading network with the domestic and international terminal operating capabilities of the Aegis and Vopak groups.

The investment follows the transfer of the terminal to ATPL by Aegis Logistics on August 24. A week later, on August 31, ITOCHU announced that it had acquired an equity stake in ATPL.

Under its management policy, “The Brand-new Deal: Profit opportunities are shifting downstream”, ITOCHU said it will expand its business domains by responding to changing societal needs and developing and transforming downstream businesses closer to consumers.
