The Department of Posts has announced a major revision in the Inland Speed Post (Document) tariff, effective from 1st October 2025, following Gazette Notification No. 4256 dated September 25, 2025. This marks the first change in more than a decade, the last tariff revision having taken place in October 2012. The decision comes in the backdrop of steadily rising operational costs and the need to invest in technology-led improvements that will sustain Speed Post as a reliable and competitive service.

Launched in 1986, Speed Post was conceived as part of India Post’s modernisation efforts and has since grown into one of the most trusted delivery networks in the country. For nearly four decades, it has held its ground against private courier companies by combining affordability, nationwide reach, and dependable service standards. With the latest upgrade, India Post has reaffirmed its strategy to strengthen customer confidence by blending traditional reach with technology-driven transparency.

The new tariff begins at ₹19 for local deliveries of documents weighing up to 50 grams and rises to ₹93 for consignments between 251 grams and 500 grams sent across distances of more than 2000 kilometres. The revisions are described as rational, designed not only to reflect current cost realities but also to support the introduction of new features that improve the end-to-end customer experience. These include OTP-based secure delivery, online booking and payment facilities, SMS notifications at the time of delivery, real-time tracking, and a registration facility that ensures handover exclusively to the addressee or an authorised representative. Each value-added feature such as registration or OTP delivery will be available for a nominal fee of ₹5 per item, in addition to the standard tariff and applicable GST.

India Post has also introduced targeted discounts to expand accessibility. A 10 percent concession has been extended to students, while a five percent discount has been announced for new bulk customers, signalling an effort to build long-term trust with both individual and institutional users. Officials highlighted that these innovations position Speed Post as a modern, transparent, and customer-centric service that continues to adapt to the evolving needs of India’s growing logistics market
