In a first for India, DP World, Deendayal Port Authority (DPA), and Nevomo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to pilot MagRail freight technology within a live port environment, marking a major step toward next-generation cargo movement in the country.

The pilot, to be implemented at Deendayal Port in Kandla, Gujarat, will deploy Nevomo’s proprietary MagRail technology to enable self-propelled, electric-powered freight movement on existing rail tracks. The 750-metre demonstration aims to boost yard efficiency, reduce reliance on diesel-powered haulage, and cut carbon emissions, supporting India’s sustainability and infrastructure modernisation goals under the National Logistics Policy and PM Gati Shakti initiative.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Rizwan Soomar, CEO & Managing Director, Middle East, North Africa & India Subcontinent, DP World, said, “We believe transformative infrastructure is driven by collaboration and long-term thinking. The partnership between DP World and Deendayal Port Authority along with Nevomo, offers a unique opportunity to reimagine the future of freight movement in India. Our commitment goes beyond individual projects—we are partnering to accelerate India’s ambition to further expand and integrate port-led logistics ecosystems and achieve carbon neutrality by leveraging technology effectively in infrastructure solutions.”

DP World, which handles nearly a quarter of India’s EXIM container trade, is leading the effort to bring advanced freight mobility to Indian ports. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, noted that the technology aligns with the company’s mission to enhance speed and efficiency across global logistics networks. “By reducing transit times and optimising infrastructure use, we aim to create greater value for customers and contribute to India’s broader connectivity goals,” he said.

Deendayal Port Authority Chairman, Sushil Kumar Singh, added, “This collaboration is a strategic advancement in port infrastructure and a significant leap in operational efficiency.”

Nevomo CEO Przemek (Ben) Paczek said the initiative would demonstrate how MagRail can automate short-haul cargo transfers while reducing emissions. The technology uses linear motors to power autonomous wagons, offering a scalable, interoperable solution for both containerised and bulk cargo.

With India’s logistics sector seeking greener, faster, and more integrated solutions, this partnership could pave the way for broader adoption of MagRail across the country’s vast port and hinterland networks.
