Varuna Elevated Corridor to boost Varanasi freight connectivity
43.2-km corridor will link NH-31 with the Ring Road and strengthen access to logistics nodes and Ramnagar Port.

The ₹10,998-crore Varuna Elevated Corridor in Varanasi is set to add a high-capacity road link for freight movement, connecting NH-31 with the Varanasi Ring Road along the Varuna River.
Approved by the Union Cabinet in July, the 43.218-km predominantly elevated corridor will be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) as a 6/4-lane route with flyovers, loops, ramps and service roads. The project will also include an iconic cable-stayed bridge and an extradosed foot over bridge-cum-major bridge.
The corridor forms part of the Varanasi Decongestion Plan and is expected to improve the movement of goods between national highways, railway infrastructure, logistics nodes and regional economic centres.
A key freight benefit will be the direct connectivity between NH-31 and the Varanasi Ring Road. This is expected to provide an alternative route for through and regional traffic, reducing pressure on congested urban roads and improving the predictability of freight journeys across the city.
The corridor will strengthen access to the Chandauli Socio-Economic Zone, Chandauli Social Node and six major logistics nodes identified under the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan.
Better integration between highways, railway infrastructure and freight corridors is expected to support the movement of agricultural produce, industrial goods, construction materials and minerals between Varanasi, Chandauli and adjoining regions.
The project is also expected to improve connectivity to Ramnagar Port, strengthening the road link between Varanasi’s regional freight network and inland waterway-linked cargo movement.
Designed for speeds of 80–100 kmph, the corridor is projected to reduce travel time between NH-31 and Kashi Railway Station from around 40 minutes to nearly 20 minutes. Faster and more predictable road movement could reduce vehicle operating costs and improve the efficiency of regional freight transportation.
The elevated alignment is intended to add road capacity without extensive widening through densely built-up parts of Varanasi. Strategically planned loops, ramps and service roads will provide access while allowing longer-distance and regional traffic to move more efficiently through the city.
The corridor is expected to ease pressure at congestion points including Varanasi Junction, Phulwaria and Chaukaghat, where local, commercial and through traffic currently compete for limited road capacity.
The project includes ₹4,565.33 crore for civil construction and ₹934.91 crore for land acquisition. Its combination of elevated sections, major bridges and access structures is designed to create a continuous high-capacity transport corridor across Varanasi.
For freight operators, the corridor could improve connectivity between production centres, logistics facilities, railway terminals, highways and regional markets across eastern Uttar Pradesh.
With Varanasi emerging as an important logistics and economic centre, the Varuna Elevated Corridor is expected to provide additional road capacity, reduce urban freight bottlenecks and strengthen the integration of the city with the wider regional supply chain.
