US-based autonomous freight rail technology pioneer Parallel Systems has entered into a strategic collaboration agreement with the corporate venture arm of global logistics and infrastructure investor Agility. The strategic partnership aims to develop, commercialise, finance, and deploy zero-emission autonomous rail freight systems across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the broader Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, and select international markets.

The initiative combines Parallel Systems’ proprietary autonomous rail platform with Agility’s extensive market reach, logistics expertise, infrastructure development capabilities, and long-standing relationships with regional stakeholders across the freight supply chain ecosystem.

Parallel’s innovative platform utilises autonomous, battery-electric vehicles that operate directly on existing rail infrastructure. These vehicles are engineered to self-sort and assemble into platoons, fully integrating with modern rail control and logistics management systems. Designed to offer flexible, frequent service on short-haul and lower-density routes, including port shuttles, inland logistics terminal connections, and city-to-city transfers, the technology enables rail transport to compete directly with road freight.

Capable of hauling standard intermodal containers for up to 500 miles on a single battery charge, Parallel’s vehicles offer a compelling solution to reduce port congestion, shorten container dwell times, and eliminate unnecessary short-distance road movements.

Arun Gupta, Executive Chairman of Parallel Systems, emphasised the transformative potential of the technology: "Parallel enables railroads to handle shorter, lower-density routes competitively, allowing shippers to use rail for short-haul freight that previously required trucks, making rail more competitive with trucking while reducing road congestion. Major railroads in the U.S. have begun adopting Parallel’s platform and we believe there is a significant opportunity to bring our revolutionary transportation system to the GCC and EMEA."

The collaboration comes at a pivotal juncture as major railway and port infrastructure projects progress rapidly across the Middle East and surrounding trade corridors. Integrating autonomous, battery-electric systems into emerging railway networks presents a major opportunity to future-proof supply chain resilience and expand port throughput.

Tarek Sultan, Chairman of Agility, highlighted the strategic timing of the project: "With major rail and port projects advancing across the GCC, now is the time to build technology into the region’s infrastructure and resilience plans. Digital systems and physical infrastructure must work together to create more connected, flexible and resilient supply chains. Autonomous rail could help unlock additional port capacity and improve container flows, from Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea gateways to major ports on the Gulf and Arabian Sea. As the GCC’s railway networks take shape, the region has an opportunity to future-proof these investments by incorporating autonomous, battery-electric technology with safety designed in from the outset."

Under the newly forged collaboration, both parties will establish a comprehensive roadmap covering regional technology adaptation, field testing, regulatory approvals, and operational protocols. Initial efforts will focus on identifying high-priority transport corridors and commercially viable freight opportunities where autonomous rail can deliver maximum efficiency and strengthen regional connectivity.
