The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Konkan Railway Corporation (KRCL) signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on January 21 to boost the seamless integration of road and rail networks to create a faster, more efficient supply chain.
The partnership specifically targets the persistent bottlenecks in India's logistics sector, fragmented infrastructure and poor last-mile connectivity. By combining the NHAI's extensive road network with KRCL's rail expertise, the collaboration aims to develop multi-modal logistics parks (MMLPs) and inter-modal hubs.
"This partnership will enable closer coordination in road and rail infrastructure planning," said an official release. "Particular focus will be given to integrated solutions that deliver greater economic value and logistics efficiency."
The MoU outlines several key logistical initiatives to enhance efficiency, including the development of integrated infrastructure such as rail-cum-road bridges and tunnels to significantly cut transit times across challenging terrains.
Furthermore, a focus is placed on ensuring seamless freight movement by planning efficient first-mile and last-mile solutions, which will eliminate friction in the transfer of goods between highways and railways.
The MoU, valid for an initial period of five years, also envisages the creation of common utility corridors and collaborative research in innovative construction materials.
Finally, the agreement covers commercial land utilisation through the joint identification of surplus land parcels along the National Highway and Konkan Railway corridors for establishing essential logistics facilities, warehousing, and commercial hubs.
The collaboration is particularly strategic for projects in India’s complex topographies. KRCL, renowned for its engineering feats in the challenging Konkan terrain, will provide specialised technical support to NHAI.
Under the agreement, KRCL will assist in the review and proof-checking of designs for complex bridges and tunnels. This includes conducting safety and quality audits for existing tunnel and slope protection works, ensuring that the logistics arteries in mountainous regions remain robust and all-weather operational.
To ensure these plans translate into action, a joint working group will be constituted. This group is tasked with identifying specific projects, conducting feasibility studies, and resolving operational hurdles.
