Gati Shakti cargo terminals handle 146 MT freight, attract ₹100 billion

India's 142 operational Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals (GCTs) handled 146 million tonnes (MT) of freight during FY2025-26 and attracted around ₹100 billion in private investment, the Ministry of Railways said. The terminals have a combined freight handling capacity of 224 million tonnes per annum (MTPA).

The ministry also said 310 additional locations have received In-Principle Approval (IPA) for the development of new Gati Shakti Cargo Terminals, expanding the country's rail freight infrastructure.

The GCT policy was introduced to encourage private investment in rail cargo terminals. Terminal locations are selected based on industry demand, cargo traffic potential, availability of railway infrastructure and the logistics potential of the area.

Among the states, Andhra Pradesh has five commissioned GCTs and approvals for another 14 locations. The Tummalacheruvu terminal in Palnadu district handled 1.214 MT of freight during FY2025-26, while one more terminal is under construction in the region. The terminals are expected to support the movement of cement, clinker, minerals, industrial goods and other commodities by rail.

Rajasthan has 10 commissioned GCTs and approvals for 15 additional locations, while Odisha has 12 operational terminals. Bihar has five commissioned terminals and approvals for eight more locations, while Madhya Pradesh has five operational GCTs and approvals for 19 additional terminals. Karnataka has four commissioned terminals and 18 approved locations.

The terminals provide rail-linked cargo handling, warehousing and cold storage facilities, supporting freight movement for sectors including cement, steel, power and agriculture.
