The Department of Posts launches 24 Speed Post (documents and letters), 24 Speed Post Parcel (heavier parcels up to 5 kg) and 48 Speed Post as the premium services, boosting its logistics capabilities and meeting the growing demand for faster and reliable delivery services. The services were inaugurated by the Union Minister of Communications, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, and the Minister of State for Communications, Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani.

According to the press release, 24 Speed Post and 24 Speed Post Parcel are specifically designed for next-day delivery between designated locations. Conversely, 48 Speed Post offers a reliable two-day delivery commitment across an expanded network.

During its initial rollout, the services will be available in six major metropolitan hubs: Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Alongside, the 48 Speed Post will provide assured D+2 (Day plus 2) delivery timelines.

The release further said that these rapid turnaround times are achieved through dedicated processing windows and priority air transmission, allowing premium mail to bypass standard transit delays.

To meet the demands of modern commerce and compete directly with global private courier services, the new speed post offerings include a suite of tech-driven features designed for both consumers and businesses.

For consumer security, features include OTP-based secure delivery, end-to-end tracking with real-time SMS alerts, and a strict money-back guarantee in case of delay.

For business solutions, 24 Speed Post now offers a book now pay later (BNPL) facility, centralised billing, free pickup for bulk bookings, and full API integration for seamless logistics management.

Expanding infrastructure
India Post is expanding its infrastructure upgrade. Speaking at the Transport Logistic India 2026 conference held in February 2026, Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General of Maharashtra Circle at India Post, outlined a strategic shift. Citing railway capacity constraints, Singh noted that India Post is transitioning a portion of its mid-mile transit from rail to road transportation and is actively seeking private partnerships to achieve this for its parcel deliveries.

"We have to partner, reach out, and tie up with those who excel in these areas to optimise our operations," Singh stated.

India Post intends to expand its current fleet of 5,000 route vehicles. The key objective of the company’s expansion is to cover almost every route, with a particular focus on linking Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities to major railway hubs, Singh said during the conference.

As of March 2025, India Post boasts an extensive network of over 1.64 lakh post offices, ensuring delivery across all Indian cities and villages. This vast network includes approximately 15,614 urban post offices and more than 1.49 lakh rural offices.

Furthermore, the department is investing heavily in automated sortation systems and is currently acquiring land to develop a network of 30 specialised hubs. “Several of these will serve as mother hubs, designed to take on heavy warehousing loads and facilitate both domestic e-commerce and cross-border exports,” added Singh.

Key last-mile initiatives are currently underway to improve delivery efficiency, including the expansion of operational days to incorporate Sunday deliveries, which will speed up e-commerce fulfilment.
