25% tariffs on Indian exports to the US: Trump
The move, he said, comes in response to what he described as India’s “high tariffs,” “obnoxious” non-monetary trade barriers, and its continued purchases of Russian energy and military equipment.;
U.S. President Donald Trump, in a strongly worded statement on his social media platform Truth Social, announced that a 25% tariff, along with an additional penalty, will be imposed on Indian imports starting August 1.
The move, he said, comes in response to what he described as India’s “high tariffs,” “obnoxious” non-monetary trade barriers, and its continued purchases of Russian energy and military equipment.
“While India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World,” Trump wrote.
He further criticised India’s long-standing defence relationship with Russia and its role as one of the largest buyers of Russian energy, at a time, he noted, when the global community is pushing for an end to the war in Ukraine.
“ALL THINGS NOT GOOD! INDIA WILL THEREFORE BE PAYING A TARIFF OF 25%, PLUS A PENALTY FOR THE ABOVE, STARTING ON AUGUST FIRST,” Trump wrote.
