DP World Mundra drives growth with new crane and electric RTGCs
DP World Mundra adds new quay crane and electric RTGCs, boosting capacity to 1.56m TEUs while cutting emissions.;
DP World has strengthened operations at Mundra International Container Terminal (MICT) in Gujarat with the arrival of a new quay crane and three electric rubber-tyre gantry cranes (e-RTGCs), raising the terminal’s handling capacity to 1.56 million TEUs by 2027. The investment not only enables Mundra to handle some of the world’s largest container vessels but also supports India’s sustainability goals under the Harit Sagar guidelines.
The new state-of-the-art quay crane can manage vessels 22 rows across, improving efficiency, reliability and safety. Equipped with predictive maintenance planning, advanced CCTV coverage and energy-efficient drive systems, the crane will boost precision while enhancing productivity. With this addition, DP World Mundra now operates eight quay cranes, offering faster vessel turnarounds and service consistency.
The three new e-RTGCs expand the fleet to 31 units, reducing terminal emissions by 18.9% (Scope 1 & 2) and cutting noise levels. This supports the government’s target of 50% port equipment electrification by 2030 and 90% by 2047.
Ravinder Johal, Chief Operating Officer - Ports & Terminals, Operations & Commercial, Middle East, North Africa and India Subcontinent, DP World, said the upgrades mark a major step in growth and sustainability. He added that by adopting world-class technology and green practices, DP World Mundra is reinforcing Gujarat’s role as a vital trade gateway and supporting India’s global trade ambitions.
The terminal is accelerating electrification with electric light motor vehicles, forklifts and upcoming electric internal transfer vehicles. It has achieved Zero Waste to Landfill certification from the National Productivity Council and is sourcing renewable energy through International Renewable Energy Certificates.
These measures are part of DP World’s global plan to cut Scope 1 emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 28% by 2030, with a goal of achieving net zero across its value chain by 2050. With direct connections to regions including the Far East, Southeast Asia, Middle East, East and West Africa, US East Coast and the Mediterranean, DP World Mundra continues to serve as a key trade hub for India.
