January 8, 2020: The year on year container growth at Vizag port from FY15 to FY19 stood at 16 percent and the importing consignments to Nepal have played a crucial role in the development.
Among the around 1,78,000 consignments imported through the port in 2019, 33, 647 of them were bound for the land-locked Himalayan country of Nepal,” reports Times of India.
In 2017, Indian customs granted Nepal the permission to import from Vizag port, before which it was only through Kolkata Port. Due to higher turnaround time, within two year, Vizag now handles 52 percent of all Nepal bound cargo and in effect more than Kolkata.
The Nepal bound cargo has food products, pulses, electronic goods and machinery mostly from the United States of America.
In 2018, the global shipping major Maersk has initiated a dedicated train from Visakhapatnam to Birgunj, Nepal. In 2019, the Indian customs has introduced the radio-frequency identification (RFID) security feature for all Nepal bound cargos for better safety.
