MoPSW launches onboard training programme for Indian seafarers
The six-month programme will provide mandatory onboard training for GP Rating and CCMC trainees, helping improve their job prospects in the shipping industry.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) has launched a six-month Structured Onboard Training Programme for General Purpose (GP) Rating and Certificate Course in Maritime Catering (CCMC) trainees to improve the employability of Indian seafarers. The programme began on July 15, 2026, and is being conducted onboard MV Swaraj Dweep, a passenger vessel owned by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration and managed by The Shipping Corporation of India Ltd. (SCI).
The initiative has been introduced to address the challenge faced by pre-sea trained youth waiting to complete their mandatory onboard training. It aims to bridge the gap between pre-sea training and employment by providing eligible GP Rating and CCMC trainees with structured onboard training.
The programme is being implemented by SCI in collaboration with the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA) under the guidance of MoPSW. It is financially supported by the Maritime Training Trust (MTT), while SCI is responsible for planning, executing, administering and monitoring the programme.
According to the Ministry, the initiative will help build a stronger pool of skilled Indian maritime professionals while creating more employment opportunities in both the domestic and global shipping industry. The programme is aligned with the objectives of Maritime India Vision 2030.
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways said it will continue working with maritime stakeholders to create sustainable employment opportunities for India’s youth and build a future-ready, globally competitive maritime workforce.
