GAIL strengthens LNG supply chain through JV with Japan’s MOL
The agreement forms LNG Japonica Shipping Corporation, a joint venture where MOL has a 74% stake and GAIL holds 26%.

State-run energy major GAIL (India) has entered into a long-term charter agreement with the Japanese transport major Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) for the liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier, Gail Bhuwan.
This deal was finalised in Goa on January 27 during the India Energy Week 2026. The agreement establishes a joint venture entity, LNG Japonica Shipping Corporation, where MOL holds a 74% stake and GAIL holds the remaining 26%.
This collaboration strengthens the long-standing business partnership between MOL and GAIL, further enhancing their cooperation in LNG shipping and energy logistics. GAIL is leveraging MOL’s proven expertise in providing reliable, high-standard transportation services, emphasizing safety and quality.
Through this project, and by deepening its partnership with GAIL, the MOL group aims to expand its energy business. It will continue to support the rapidly growing demand for energy, including natural gas, by contributing to the transport and logistics infrastructure, thereby ensuring a stable energy supply.
For its part, GAIL has built the nation's largest LNG fleet, reinforcing India’s maritime capabilities and guaranteeing the continuous availability of LNG to meet the country’s increasing domestic demand.
