Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the 14-km Tadali–Ghugus railway section in Maharashtra at an estimated cost of ₹228 crore, strengthening freight capacity on the busy Wardha–Balharshah corridor, part of the Delhi–Chennai High Density Network (HDN).

The project has been sanctioned under Indian Railways' capacity augmentation programme for doubling, tripling, quadrupling and bypass works aimed at improving network efficiency and supporting rising freight demand on key rail corridors.

The Tadali–Ghugus section is currently a single-line route that primarily serves freight operations. It transports a range of bulk commodities, including coal, iron ore, gypsum, petroleum products (POL), sand and laterite ash, making it an important link for industrial and energy supply chains.

According to Indian Railways, the doubling project will increase line capacity, improve train operations and ease congestion on the corridor, enabling more efficient movement of freight trains.

Once commissioned, the additional track is expected to facilitate an extra 4.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of freight traffic, enhancing the railway's ability to handle growing cargo volumes while improving operational reliability.

The project forms part of Indian Railways' broader strategy to strengthen freight infrastructure through targeted capacity expansion on high-density routes, supporting lower logistics costs and more efficient movement of bulk cargo across the country's industrial corridors.
