First FCI food grain train arrives at Mizoram’s Sairang station
The 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025, added Sairang to India's railway map.

The inaugural Food Corporation of India (FCI) food grain cargo train reached Sairang Railway Station on March 3rd, 2026. This cargo train consisted of 42 wagons and transported approximately 25,900 quintals of rice originating from Punjab.
According to an official press release, this development marks an important step in boosting rail-based freight connectivity and ensuring a more efficient supply chain for essential commodities within the state. The successful operation highlights the growing operational capability of Sairang station and highlights the expanding role of railway infrastructure in the region.
The 51.38 km Bairabi-Sairang railway line, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 13 September 2025, added Sairang to India's railway map. This new link now directly connects the state capital, Aizawl, to the national railway network.
Since its commissioning, freight operations on the Bairabi-Sairang section have rapidly gained momentum. The inaugural freight movement saw 21 cement wagons successfully moved to Sairang shortly after the line's inauguration, setting the stage for regular freight traffic to the state.
Between April 2025 and March 2026, the Sairang Terminal managed over 30 freight rakes, demonstrating a steady increase in rail-based cargo movement in Mizoram. The commodities handled during this period included 3.5 rakes of cement, 2 rakes of automobiles, 0.5 rakes of fertilizers, 20.5 rakes of stone chips, and 4 rakes of sand.
