EIM opens second battery swapping facility at JNPA for EV Megaplex

Energy In Motion (EIM) has taken another monumental step forward in decarbonising heavy freight transport by inaugurating its second heavy-duty battery swapping-cum-charging station at the Nhava Sheva Distribution Terminal (NSDT) within the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) complex. The launch event marks the foundational phase in building an ambitious EV Megaplex at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal (JNPT), directly reinforcing JNPA’s goal to achieve a complete energy transition by December 2027.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by key dignitaries from government bodies, port administrative authorities, and industry leaders. Shri Lokesh Chandra, Additional Chief Secretary to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Maharashtra and CMD of MSEDCL, graced the occasion as the Distinguished Chief Guest. Joining as Guests of Honour were Shri Gaurav Dayal, Chairperson of JNPA, and Shri Ravish Kumar Singh, Deputy Chairperson of JNPA. Energy In Motion was represented by Managing Director Shri Narendra Murkumbi, alongside Shri Shantanu Lath, CEO of Ravindra Energy Ltd.

The newly commissioned facility expands upon the rapid success of EIM’s initial E5 battery swapping station at JNPA. That initial facility reached full operational capacity shortly after deployment, underscoring an accelerating demand for clean, electric heavy mobility across round-the-clock port operations. At present, nearly 150 EIM electric trucks are actively serving operational corridors across JNPA. Their performance has comprehensively demonstrated the commercial and operational viability of heavy electric fleets in demanding maritime logistics environments.

The new station at NSDT represents the first brick of an integrated EV Megaplex that will ultimately bring together three battery swap-cum-charging stations, a dedicated service station, a specialised driver training centre, and a state-of-the-art heavy-vehicle simulator. Once fully realised, this multi-faceted hub will work alongside existing swapping infrastructure to enable the complete electrification of more than 700 heavy trucks traversing key terminal corridors. Beyond upgrading vehicle drivetrains and power distribution systems, the EV Megaplex establishes a comprehensive end-to-end operational framework. Rapid battery swapping ensures minimal vehicle downtime, while on-site servicing safeguards fleet availability. Meanwhile, simulator-backed driver training programmes aim to build human resource capabilities tailored to high-capacity electric logistics.

As JNPA moves towards its December 2027 energy-transition milestone, the EV Megaplex at NSDT emerges as a critical building block in this journey, connecting cleaner energy, electric vehicles and smarter freight operations into one integrated ecosystem”

This initiative highlights how sustainable technology, combined with smart infrastructure management like slot optimisation and shared operational workflows, can seamlessly integrate zero-emission transport into complex logistics corridors. As JNPA pushes towards its end-2027 green transition mandate, EIM’s expanding footprint stands out as a pioneering blueprint for green port operations across India.
