India depicts phenomenal rise in logistics performance index
July 07, 2016: Showing remarkable improvement from the previous Logistics Performance Index (LPI), owing to an improvement in movement of goods and services, facilitating better trade, India has jumped 19 places in the latest World Bank ranking in the global logistics performance index. The WB brings out the Logistics Performance Index (LPI) once in two years. Presently, India is now ranked 35th against the 54th position it held in the previous LPI, which was in 2014.
The improved logistics performance shall provide a boost to programmes such as Make in India, paving the way for seamless integration in the world supply chain and providing a massive impetus to trade.
While Germany tops the 2016 rankings, India is ahead of comparatively advanced economies like Portugal and New Zealand. “In the latest ranking India has gone past countries like New Zealand, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, Iceland, Latvia and Indonesia who were ahead of it in the index,” the report said.
India is fairly close in areas of timeliness and international shipments but is lagging behind in terms of overall logistics performance and other parameters in the LPI vis-a-vis Germany.
Jim Yong Kim, president of WB who met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi felicitated him on this achievement and expressed the WB’s commitment to support India for its endeavours and various projects.
