Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurates maritime simulation centre in Chennai
The facility is established with an investment of ₹13.5 crore.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, on 26 of September inaugurated a new Maritime Simulation Centre at AMET Knowledge Park, Maersk's Centre of Excellence, in Thenpattinam near Chennai.
The facility, established with a total investment of ₹13.5 crore (₹135 million), aims to provide advanced training to maritime professionals.
The facility is the result of a strategic partnership between the Academy of Maritime Education and Training (AMET) and A.P. Moller-Maersk. The A.P. Moller Foundation contributed approximately ₹6.5 crore (₹65 million) to the project, highlighting the more than 25-year-long collaboration between AMET and Maersk.
Minister Sonowal said, "AMET University and Maersk have demonstrated exceptional commitment to nurturing India's maritime talent. This world-class facility will empower our young professionals with the advanced skills needed to excel in the global shipping industry."
The new center is designed to provide cadets with realistic maritime scenarios in a controlled academic environment. Through highly authentic simulations, students can gain practical experience and a deep understanding of complex maritime tasks, preparing them for real-world sea operations while adhering to high global standards.
The facility is equipped with advanced technology, like full mission simulators for deck and engine operations, Electronic Chart Display and Information Systems (ECDIS) and Advanced Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR) laboratories.
These systems will offer hands-on training in essential maritime skills such as watchkeeping, collision avoidance, navigation light identification, and engine troubleshooting.
