The passing of the Indian Ports Bill 2025 marks a landmark reform that modernises India’s ports, boosts efficiency, and strengthens the country’s global trade position. Santosh Shetty, CEO of Isa Logistics Pvt Ltd, welcomed the Bill and described it as a turning point for the maritime and logistics sector.

“The Indian Ports Bill 2025 is more than just policy reform, it is a practical step toward building an efficient and future-ready logistics ecosystem. Transparent tariffs, faster clearances through a single-window system, and a predictable framework for port operations will reduce bottlenecks, cut costs, and make cargo movement smoother. Importantly, the focus on sustainability and digitalisation ensures that as our ports grow, they remain globally competitive and environmentally responsible,” Shetty said.

The new law replaces the colonial-era Indian Ports Act of 1908 and introduces major reforms. It establishes the Maritime State Development Council to strengthen Centre–State coordination and sets up State Maritime Boards to bring uniform governance across ports. These changes come as India’s maritime sector shows strong growth, with cargo handling rising from 581 million tonnes in FY2015 to 855 million tonnes in FY2025.

The Bill also drives technology-led efficiency through Maritime Single Window systems and advanced vessel traffic management. With ship turnaround times already down to 48 hours, a global benchmark, the reforms promise even greater efficiency to support India’s trade ambitions.

By aligning port development with global environmental standards and embedding disaster preparedness systems, the legislation ensures growth is both sustainable and resilient. Shetty added that the Bill enables transparent, technology-driven, and sustainable port operations and will accelerate India’s journey to becoming a global supply chain powerhouse, while advancing the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
