India flags off direct air cargo mission to Antarctica
Mission from Goa strengthens India’s polar research logistics with seamless cargo support to Antarctic stations.

India has achieved a major milestone in polar logistics with the launch of its first direct air cargo mission to Antarctica. The National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), Goa, flagged off the historic flight from Manohar International Airport, Mopa, marking a new chapter in India’s scientific and logistical capabilities in one of the world’s most challenging regions.
The flight, operated by DROMLAN’s IL-76 aircraft, is carrying 18 tonnes of essential equipment, medicines, and provisions to support operations at India’s Bharati and Maitri research stations in Antarctica. The mission is expected to significantly strengthen India’s polar research programmes by ensuring faster and more reliable supply of materials to the continent.
DROMLAN, or the Dronning Maud Land Air Network, is a cooperative air logistics initiative among several countries with research stations in East Antarctica. It provides shared air connectivity and cargo support to participating nations, improving access to remote research bases during the austral summer season.
India’s Bharati Station, located on the Larsemann Hills, serves as a hub for atmospheric, biological, and earth sciences research. Maitri Station, situated in the Schirmacher Oasis, is one of India’s oldest Antarctic bases and continues to support studies in geology, climate, and environmental monitoring. Together, they represent India’s long-term scientific presence and commitment to polar research.
This pioneering operation has been seamlessly facilitated by GMR Aero Cargo & Logistics at Mopa Airport, with key support from Alpha Crux and Ultima Antarctic Logistics, South Africa. The collaboration underscores India’s growing expertise in managing complex international logistics operations linked to science and exploration.
The successful flag-off from Goa highlights India’s expanding capabilities in integrating air cargo operations with scientific research logistics, positioning the country as a strong player in global polar operations.
