HIP cargo volume jumps 151% by September 2025
Throughput crossed 6 million tons as HIP managed congestion and expanded capacity efficiently.

Cargo throughput at Hambantota International Port (HIP) surged 151% year-on-year, reaching 6,028,493 metric tons by September 2025, up from 2,397,971 metric tons in the same period last year. The growth came despite operational pressures following the lifting of the ban on local vehicle imports, which caused congestion and delays in yard clearance.
To manage the increased demand, HIP optimised yard allocation, adjusted container flows, and refined stacking strategies, while also boosting manpower and expanding yard space. These measures allowed the port to maintain regular productivity and handle vessels without delay.
The growth comes alongside strategic investments. In late 2024, HIP spent $41 million on cranes, raising container handling capacity to 1 million TEUs annually. The port also expanded its bunkering and energy services, registering notable gains in LPG throughput and bunker volumes, while vehicle transshipment grew 26% year-on-year.
Wilson Qu, CEO of HIPG, said the port remained focused on delivering reliable service under growing demand and was ready to collaborate with stakeholders, shipping lines, and government bodies to support Sri Lanka’s trade, energy, and logistics objectives.
