Lufthansa Cargo introduces new tools for temperature-sensitive freight
The service supports both Active Temp Control and Passive Temp Support options.
In May 2025, Lufthansa Cargo announced the addition of four new features to strengthen its temperature-sensitive logistics services. Based in Germany and operating worldwide, the company introduced these updates to address increasing customer demand for the safe transport of products like vaccines, microchips, and high-tech components. The new features include 24/7 shipment monitoring via a Pharma Control Tower, added protection with Thermo Covers, live tracking through smartULD, and quicker booking options using td.Zoom.
The Pharma Control Tower service has been operational since the end of April and allows 24/7 monitoring of shipments at Lufthansa Cargo hubs in Frankfurt, Munich, and Brussels. "Customers can use the ‘Pharma Control Tower’ to enquire about shipments to and from our 30 CEIV-certified stations worldwide," the company stated. The service supports both "Active Temp Control" and "Passive Temp Support" options.
Thermo Covers are now available for "Passive Temp Support" shipments to shield goods from heat and cold during ramp handling. "Initially, the Thermo Covers will be used on air freight pallets in the main and lower decks during the summer months (May to September) on routes between Frankfurt and Atlanta, Cairo, Chicago, and Toronto," Lufthansa Cargo said. The service is offered free of charge.
The smartULD feature offers real-time monitoring for “Active Temp Control” shipments by equipping certain container types with sensors that continuously record temperature data. The information is accessible through the Lufthansa Cargo website under the "eServices" menu. This digital solution provides end-to-end visibility from delivery to pickup.
The final update enables customers to book "Passive Temp Support" with td.Zoom for expedited transport. This option offers faster access to capacity and reduced transit times for items like pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, and high-tech products, without any weight restrictions.
Lufthansa Cargo plans to roll out additional improvements in the coming months. These include allowing customers to view temperature data at selected stations via the website and upgrading the temperature-controlled truck network. The company stated, "These measures all contribute to one goal: continuously improving transport quality and process stability for temperature-sensitive freight."
