Hambantota International Port has launched an Automated Gate Pass Management System, becoming the first port in Sri Lanka to introduce a fully automated and paperless gate access process. The system uses QR code technology to manage entry and exit at port gates and forms part of the port’s broader digital transformation programme.
The system was inaugurated at the Hambantota Maritime Centre in the presence of port officials and representatives from Data Management Services, the technology partner behind the platform. Hambantota International Port Group Chief Executive Officer Wilson Qu attended the event as chief guest.
The Automated Gate Pass Management System replaces manual gate pass procedures with a digital access control process. It allows faster verification at entry points and reduces dependence on paperwork, while lowering processing time and limiting manual intervention. The platform is intended to improve operational flow within the port and reduce congestion at access points.
According to the port operator, the system strengthens security and traceability by enabling real-time monitoring of movements within port premises. It also simplifies permit issuance for users and supports improved access control through digital validation.
Speaking at the launch, Wilson Qu said the initiative reflects the port’s focus on smart operations. “The Automated Gate Pass Management System is a key milestone in our journey towards smart port operations. By adopting a fully automated, QR-based system, we are strengthening security, improving efficiency, and aligning our operations with global best practises,” he said.
Capt. Miyuru Gunasekara, General Manager of Hambantota International Port Services, said the system would support tighter compliance and better visibility across gate operations. “AGPMS enhances gate-level control by ensuring faster processing, improved safety, and better visibility of access movements, while delivering a smoother experience for authorised users,” he said.
The launch marks the first phase of a wider digitalisation programme at Hambantota International Port. The port is positioning the system as part of its efforts to improve operational efficiency and support Sri Lanka’s broader push towards technology-led logistics and port management.
