Chennai air freight station (AFS) that was conceptualised seven years ago is set to commence operations. The AFS shall provide respite to never ending queues of cargo near the airport gateways. The AFS is spread over an area of around 20,000 square feet near Iringattukottai, the AFS is an extension of the airport or an off-terminal facility where all import formalities can be completed without hassles for cargo transmit. Set up by the city-based Indev Logistics at a cost of Rs 50 crore, the AFS can act as a final destination for cargo delivery. The major advantages of the AFS include faster evacuation of cargo from the major gateway airports; an integrated supply chain, minimised transaction logistics cost; and tracking of the mobility and movement of the cargo. All activities, including Custom documentation and examination, cargo acceptance check, security checks, cargo palletisation and warehousing will be carried out at the AFS.
