New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) has handled more than 26 million tonnes of cargo in the current financial year as of 12 October 2026, compared with approximately 24.23 million tonnes during the corresponding period last year, registering a year-on-year growth of 7.68%.

The milestone reflects continued growth in cargo traffic at the port, supported by its operational performance and the contribution of port users, trade partners and other stakeholders.

NMPA’s achievement also highlights the port’s role in facilitating the movement of domestic and international cargo through Karnataka and the wider Indian maritime network. The port handles a range of commodities, including petroleum, oil and lubricant (POL) products, general cargo and containerised freight.

Container Handling and Operational Efficiency
Alongside overall cargo growth, NMPA reported container handling of 103,759 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). TEUs are the standard unit used to measure container traffic, with one TEU representing the capacity of a 20-foot container.

The port has also highlighted improved operational efficiency through effective traffic management and coordination of cargo movements. Truck deliveries and cargo-handling activities involving JSW and other users form part of the port’s broader operational activity.

Strengthening Karnataka’s Maritime Connectivity
Located in Panambur, near Mangaluru in Karnataka, New Mangalore Port is a major port on India’s west coast. It serves the cargo requirements of Karnataka and provides maritime connectivity for industries and trade in the surrounding hinterland.

The port handles diverse cargo, including crude oil and petroleum products, coal, fertilisers, food-related commodities, iron ore, construction materials and other industrial goods. Its facilities support the movement of bulk, liquid and general cargo, connecting regional industries with domestic and international markets.

As a key maritime gateway for Karnataka, NMPA plays a role in supporting industrial supply chains, energy imports, exports and regional trade. Improvements in cargo-handling efficiency, road connectivity and coordination among port stakeholders are important to maintaining cargo flows as volumes increase.

The latest milestone reinforces NMPA’s focus on operational efficiency, cargo growth and sustainable port development. The authority has described the achievement as a step towards a stronger, greener and more prosperous maritime future.
