Minister of Railways inaugurates round table conference on railway security issues

May 19, 2017: Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu recently inaugurated a round table conference with non railway stakeholders on railway security issues.

Minister of State for Railways Rajen Gohain, railway board chairman AK Mital other railway board members and senior officials were also present on the occasion. During the session, inputs by various stakeholders were submitted so that efforts could be made to implement new initiatives to strengthen security for Indian Railways.

Speaking on the occasion Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu said that safety and security of railways has always been challenging and Indian Railways is looking at different ideas from different stakeholders for improving the security issues. He gave the example of central monitoring system that has been implemented by the Indian Railways for monitoring security in Konkan Railways. He said railways is now giving more emphasis on intelligence gathering and forensic issues.

It is being increasingly realized that the railway security apparatus needs to collaborate with other stakeholders for delivering the service as per the need of people. In addition, the security agencies need to take their help too in providing service to passengers.

Some of the topics discussed in the conference were security of women on railway – challenges and solutions, security of trafficked/ runaway/ destitute children and specially abled persons found on railways, measures to control theft, snatching/ robbery, dacoity and drugging on railways, sabotage and suspected incidents of sabotage in railways and preventive measures, awareness programmes and use of technology to improve security in railways and safeguard against cyber crime in railways.
