April 05, 2017: In a bid to shift the load of passengers from the New Delhi railway station, the ministry of Railways has decided to start a new railway terminal in the nearby Gurugram.

The new railway terminal at Gurugram equipped with world class facilities and located just about 32 km away from the New Delhi station, will take the load off Delhi, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said.

"The work on this project will start soon. Besides, Rohtak railway station will be developed as a model station under public-private-partnership (PPP) mode," he said at a programme organised by the Northern Railways in Rohtak.

New Delhi railway station is one of the busiest terminals in the country which caters to more than five lakh passengers in a day.

The Railways have also planned to redevelop New Delhi station with help from South Korea, as part of a programme to attract substantial revenue through redevelopment of 400 stations with private participation. The railways has recently launched the first phase of the ambitious station redevelopment project for 23 junctions.

Gurugram already has a station which the Railways have been trying to improve by adding passenger amenities. However it has fewer number of platforms than what is required to handle large number of trains.
